I would like to welcome you to our site and tell you a bit about who we are and why it is so exciting to work and live here in Austin, Texas. Our Family Medicine Residency program began in 1973. Since then we have established a tradition of providing excellence in clinical training for Family Medicine residents and medical students. Our program has four main areas of focus. The most significant of these is the residency program. Our number one goal is that each resident will have an experience that will provide them with the skills and knowledge to meet the ever increasingly complex, but still very rewarding, career challenges. Through the highest quality clinical experience, combined with our didactic curriculum, we meet this goal. The learning environment is meant to challenge and stimulate the residents and students to reach within themselves to become the best physicians.
Not only are the entire faculty passionate about teaching, but they also have their own patients. Each faculty member provides a broad scope of care to their patients. Several bring special areas of interest to their teaching and practices including; women’s health, obstetrical care (including operative obstetrics), HIV/AIDS and virology, procedural skills, pediatrics, inpatient medicine, practice management and sports medicine. We are always striving to expand our diversity in faculty expertise.
Our Sports Medicine program is relatively new, having a start in 2003. In 2006 we added a fellowship trained faculty. This part of our program will likely see the biggest growth in the near future as we develop a clinical sports medicine practice, a relationship with the University of Texas athletics and other local sports teams at the collegiate and high school level as well as a fellowship training program.
Medical student training is our fourth main area of focus. We see this as a natural extension of our passion for resident education. We offer experiences for both 3rd and 4th year students, and are eager to find ways to meet our student’s needs. We are willing to help students create unique experiences that will help prepare them for the rigors of residency and beyond.
I want to finish by saying that Austin is a great place to live. I came here four years ago after having been the director of a large program in North Carolina. My prior experience was tremendous, but the opportunities and potential here in Austin are even greater. It is a wonderful place to live, raise a family and enjoy a social life with exceptional outdoor activities, cultural and community events. As the capital of our state, it is a diverse city with much to experience and enjoy. So much so that many of our graduates have decided to make this their home after graduating the program. The projections of continued growth will continue to ensure that our graduates will have plenty of local opportunities after residency.
Thank you for visiting with us. There is a lot more that I hope you will learn about our program. Please take a few minutes to navigate our site, and feel free to contact me or any of us if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Samuel B. Adkins III, MD
Program Director
