Residents working
The three year training experience is centered in the ambulatory practice each resident has at the Blackstock Family Health Center. This office is named in honor of Dr. Mathis Blackstock, an Austin Family Physician who dedicated his career to providing care for all, and who continues to be active in the community and the residency. In their continuity practice in the center, each resident develops a panel of patients that is diverse in culture, age, disease burden, and socio-economic challenge. Residents provide full scope Family Medicine care for these patients with the support of a talented, energetic and passionate faculty.
Inpatient training occurs primarily at the University Medical Center at Brackenridge, which is located adjacent to the Blackstock Family Health Center. Residents also rotate through and care for continuity patients at the Dell Children’s Hospital, a state of the art pediatric hospital that is a five minute drive away. The teaching faculty in both of these institutions have been training our residents for many years and are committed to helping them receive excellent training.
Residents also rotate with community physicians who have been involved with teaching for many years. Residents learn orthopedics, dermatology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, and urology in these offices.
The Family Medicine faculty are anchored by Dr. David Wright, who has been in the program for 24 years. Dr. Wright has been the recipient of numerous awards and professional honors and is a former Texas Family Physician of the year. All of the faculty are passionate about teaching and keeping the quality of the education and patient care at the highest level.
